The Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) of The American University in Cairo (AUC) is offering the following Short Course
Migration patterns and trends to and from the Middle East and North Africa Region are complex including labor migration, forced migration and mixed migration. In 2021, a number of countries in the region produced their first National Voluntary Review of the national progress towards the objectives of the Global compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration (GCM). In recent years, countries in the region have worked towards reforms of migration frameworks including legislative, regulatory and policy areas towards enhancing migration governance. The course will enable participants to engage in a critical reading of the term “migration governance” in relation to the MENA region. It will cover the global migration processes such as GCM and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their interlinkages with migration in relation to context of case studies in the MENA region. It will shed the light on the regional migration processes and draw from the national experiences of countries in the region and beyond. In addressing the national frameworks and the role of stakeholders, the course will look into practices in the region related to the protection of migrants throughout the migratory processes. The course will shed the light on policies in countries in the region tailored for returnees and vulnerable groups including smuggled migrants and victims of trafficking.
