The Child Protection in Emergencies Professional Development Programme - East and Southern Africa (ESA)
Save the Children with funding from IKEA has developed a capacity building programme to strengthen Child Protection in Emergencies response capability in the East and Southern Africa Region. It aims to increase regional and national deployment capacity and reserves.
Emergencies have a devastating effect on children’s lives. The East and Southern Africa[1] region experiences a diverse range of emergencies, including conflicts, natural disasters as well as migration and displacement with numerous, large-scale protection issues facing children. Of concern there is an unprecedented number of unaccompanied and separated children as a result of the crisis in Burundi and South Sudan. If child protection mechanisms are not adequately put in place immediately, children face the risk of abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence. Exacerbating the effects of the emergencies is the limited number of skilled practitioners in Child Protection in Emergencies.
Programme Details
The East and Southern Africa CPiE Professional Development Programme builds on Save the Children’s extensive experience in building child protection capacity globally and the successes and lessons learnt from the Child Protection in Emergencies Professional Development Programme running in Asia Pacific and Middle East and Eastern Europe. It has been designed around a comprehensive Capacity Gaps Analysis conducted in the East and Southern Africa Region. The programme’s learning outcomes are aimed at strengthening competencies in the following areas:
